Wat voor een schaduw ligt daar over lage landen?

Daar drijft een bruine bui en breidt zich immer uit,

Vermengd met zwaveldamp van knallend wapenkruit,

En rookpluimen van aangestoken woningbranden.

 

De ingestorte daken en beroete wanden,

Met half gesloopte pui of ingeslagen ruit,

Het lage land verwoest, gebrandschat, uitgebuit.

De Nederlandse leeuw met uitgeslagen tanden!

 

Wat voor een furie is hier zo erg losgebroken?

En wie is hier zo dol en driest te keer gegaan?

Waarom heeft het gemeen gepeupel bloed geroken?

 

Er is een openbaringsruiter opgestaan,

Die als geen ander het geloof weet op te stoken,

Hij wakkert waan en godsdienstoorlog aan.
