De film Cruising als momentopname. Cruising, de film gebaseerd op de roman van Gerard Walker, werd uitgebracht in 1980, maar pas in 1981 vertoond in Belgische bioscopen. De film veroorzaakte veel controverse – zeker met foto’s zoals die hierboven – maar bood tegelijkertijd een uniek inzicht in een relatief nieuw fenomeen voor het publiek: de homosubcultuur die in de Angelsaksische metropolen een toch wel explosieve groei doormaakte.
Begin jaren tachtig werd de wereld opgeschud door een mysterieuze ziekte. Steeds meer artsen werden geconfronteerd met een nieuw ziektebeeld bij hun patiënten. De eerste patiënten waren vooral (jonge) mannen van wie de weerstand erg verzwakte. Ze ontwikkelden sarcomen, kregen infecties en overleden uiteindelijk aan een ziekte die gezonde individuen makkelijk konden overwinnen.
